“The Road Not Taken” Analysis
In the poem, “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost, Frost uses repetition, metaphors,
and imagery described in his poem. The use of repetition add to the suspense of the
poem as it is used in the beginning of a line. For example, “And sorry I could not travel
both” “And be one traveler, long I stood” “And looked down one as far as I could” (Line
2, 3, 4; Stanza 1) The use of “And” in the beginning lines foreshadow that it would include more details afterwards. Frost includes a use of imagery listed throughout in the poem to give a fuller description about the roads he or she is taking. Also importantly, in line 1, 5, 8, and 12 specifically the quote describes the view of what he or she sees. “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood” This quote describes to us, the readers, about how the two roads are divided by and what it is divided with, which is a yellow wood. (Line 1, Stanza 1) “To where it bent in the undergrowth” (Line 5, Stanza 1) I can infer from my experience which leads to my mind immediately thinking about a sun setting on the horizon. ‘It bent in the undergrowth’ The undergrowth may be the ground and the ‘bent’ would the horizon between the sun setting and the ground. “Because it was grassy and wanted water” (Line 8, Stanza 2) This tells the readers how the science may look. There would be grass covering the land, but it would be very dry as it states that it is in need of water. “ In leaves no step had trodden black” (Line 12, Stanza 3) This quote describes to the readers how the leaves are decaying without anybody having to step on it, but the leaves already decaying by the color becoming darker already. Overall, this poem by Frost includes a handful of literary devices listed among this poem to carry out a message Frost desires the readers to understand while describing the scene with literary devices such as imagery, metaphors, or repetition.
