~~~~~~Al tries to steal the hammer because he has nails and other supplies but all he needs is to get a hammer in order to make something and because he wnats it. "......when he saw a real hammer, and he was possessed with a longing to have it. He believed it was just what he needed by which to break the ,monotomy and which to make something." (page 79)
2.) Why does Al say that he didn’t mean to steal the hammer?
~~~~~~Al says that he didnt mean to steal the hammer because it was his excuse and because he didnt have the money and since he was humiliated he was also under pressure. " ' I didnt mean to steal it. I just need it and I havent got the money.' " (page 80)

~~~~~~Al is "deeply ashamed" (page 81) after he leaves the store because the two men who caught him humiliated him, he was deeply ashamed, he hated to young man who had made him stand in silence and be in the office so long. "The first thing he did when he was freed was laugh, but he knew he was humiliated, and he was deeply ashamed. He hated the young man who had caught him and he hated the manager of the store who had made him stand in silence in the office for so long" (page 81)

" ' I just won't take your maoney for something I don't really need. I just thought I ought to have a hammer, so I could make something I felt like it.
