“The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse” Analysis
In the short story, “The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse” by William Saroyan, is
about the story of a boy and his cousin who stole a horse. Their family is described as
poor and unwealthy, but famous for their honesty. The four components, dialogue,
setting/mood, characters, and vocabulary all are able to affect the course of the story.
For example, dialogue helps the readers further understand the any story more in depth.
“Aram, he said” (pg. 1) In the story, William Saroyan did not use quotation marks when
characters were conversing with each other like many other authors. In addition, the
settings and mood affect the story because it effects the way readers feel about the plot
of the story. The descriptions of the moods are able to change the readers’ feelings. “…
and the world was full of every imaginable kind of magnificence, and life was still a
delightful and mysterious dream,” (pg. 1) This quote allows us to know the story could be
a positive and happy beginning. Also, the element of characters are able to change the
plot of the story depending on their importance to it. “It was true then. He had stolen the
horse. There was no question about it.” (pg. 3) This informs us that the cousin, Mourad, is
the antagonist who creates all the conflict, without Mourad the story would be
uninteresting. Lastly, William Saroyan uses vocabulary words to create the story to
become more amazing with stronger words. “The distribution of the various kinds of
spirit of our tribe had been form the beginning capricious and vagrant.” (pg. 4) The words
capricious and vagrant helps make us begin to think and imagine a stronger vision of the
story. Each element William Saroyan uses in the story affects the plot, the flow, and how
everything comes together.
