Heartbeat
In the short story, “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe focuses on the continuing pattern of a morbid, psychotic, dark tone complimenting his style of writing. An unidentified man living with another person who Edgar names him as, “old man” which could be assumed as the father of the man. The man suffers from a sickness leaving him with voices trapped in his head and his senses becoming stronger while her body and mind become weak. The old man has one eye that brings the man insecurities and fear so for seven day and nights the man watches over the old man with the urge to kill him. The eighth night he feels a sudden power that had led him to murder the old man by cutting his air flow with his blanket then dumping the body under the floorboard placing the pieces back perfectly as if nothing happened. Afterwards, he feels accomplished and satisfied without the eye as he stated, “There was no sound. Yes. He was dead! Dead as a stone. His eye would trouble me no more!” (pg. 3, p.1) At the end of the short story, the police come when the neighbors hear the old man’s shriek. The man convinces them acting innocent until he hears noises of heartbeats that seem to be increasing and getting louder by the second that drove him even crazier that before. The sound of the heartbeats lead to the confession of his murder due to the guilt and nervousness piling up after another. Throughout the entire short story Edgar Allen Poe describes the storyline or plot with a suspenseful tone while including the dark menacing tone that relates to the man’s psychotic personality with a bit of morbid action. The suspense written in the story is shown by the description of the words and the action. For example, “I stood quite still. For a whole hour I did not move. Nor did I hear him again lie down in his bed. He just sat there, listening.” This quote gives the hint of suspense by the way Poe describes the way how the man did not move for a whole hour doing nothing. Also importantly, another quote written by Poe that includes the suspense would be, “So you think that I am mad? A madman cannot plan. But you should have seen me. During all of that week I was as friendly to the old man as I could be, and warm, and loving.” (pg.2, p.2) This tells us how the man first begins with a question then answering with a confusing crazy answer. In conclusion, throughout the story one of Edgar main tones were suspense and many others that could be found all throughout the story while carrying the dark creepy tone.
